What to Wear When the Weather is Weird
If you’re anything like me, the transitional weather periods really throw you off. Like, someone please explain to me why one day it’s a cool, crisp 65 degrees, and the next day mother nature decides that #hotgirlsummer needs one last hurrah. Or why when I go out in the morning it feels like a chilly fall day and I’m reaching for the PSLs, but by noon my eyeballs are sweating. I think since fall is my favorite season, I feel even more personally victimized by the lingering summer days, but even worse is how difficult it is to pick out an outfit that suits the ever-changing temps.
Luckily, living in Atlanta my whole life has taught me how to prepare for such inconveniences. I always keep my closet stocked with a few essentials that can carry me straight through late summer and into fall. I’m rounding up all the items I consider transitional season must-haves below, and linking a few of my current favorites in each category!
Blanket Scarves / Pashminas
Ever since my 10th-grade math teacher decided to keep her classroom at sub-zero temps, I’ve been a fan of the blanket scarf. Whether you call it a pashmina, scarf, or wrap, the benefits cannot be denied. This wonderful article of clothing has gotten me through many an arctic office environment, freakishly cold plane ride, transitional season wedding, and Atlanta October.
I’ve built up quite a collection over the years, and I love how just a simple color or fabric change makes it an appropriate piece for almost any occasion or outfit. The fact that it can be styled so many different ways, and easily removed, makes it an essential piece for times when the weather is a bit mercurial. Check out some of my current favorites below! I particularly love this cashmere wrap by Halogen. It’s the perfect size and thickness, plus it’s a great price point. I bought it in black several years ago and recently purchased the camel color as well!
This time of year, I prefer buttoned cardigans to pullover sweaters because they’re easier to shed should the weather take a sudden turn. It’s also a super easy piece to layer over a cami or bodysuit, or wear on its own as I’ve done below!
The one I’m wearing is by Something Navy x Nordstrom, and you can find it here!
I’m usually more of a pants girl, but there’s no denying that skirts are much more cooling than pants. Midi skirts are my favorite this time of year, plus they transition from day to night seamlessly. Personally, I’m loving the silk midi skirt and sweater combo (bonus points if you pair the look with dad sneakers) that I’ve seen all over my Instagram feed these days. I can’t wait to try that look out soon, you know, once the thought of putting on a chunky sweater doesn’t make me immediately start sweating.
I also love how midi skirts are so versatile and really enable you to maximize your closet. You can see how I styled them four completely different ways above! My fringe skirt is sold out, but I’ll still link it HERE because I’ve seen it come back in stock before. The silk leopard skirt can be found HERE and the knit skirt is old but I linked a similar one HERE and HERE!
Trench Coats and Dusters
Last but not least, one of my forever favorite transitional pieces is, of course, the trench coat. I’ve written about why trenches can be great for in-between seasons in this blog post and this one. I also love duster coats/longline cardigans for the same reasons! These are both great layering pieces and closet staples that can take you from season to season with ease!
If you live in a fickle climate like I do, I hope this post helps get you through these weird weather times! Here’s hoping we’re in for cooler days ahead!
