Easy 10-Minute Summer Makeup
We’re officially in the dog days of summer. The days are long, hot, and in my case, humid. I’m at the point where I will think twice about plans that require me to put on makeup and/or a bra. Basically, anything that doesn’t involve a body of water, an umbrella, and copious amounts of ice water is off the list, ya feel me?
Unfortunately, my hermit plan isn’t exactly viable all the way through September. So, I’ve found a super easy and lightweight makeup routine that doesn’t make me want to immediately cancel plans and stay home with a depuffing mask and some good old A/C.
The first step is to, of course, prime your face. I’m always surprised by how many people don’t use a face primer! Whatever your usual routine, it is essential to use a primer during the hot summer months as it will keep your makeup from looking like it’s sliding down your face. My primary skin concerns are uneven tone and dryness, so anything that promises to ‘blur’ or ‘hydrate’ is a go-to for me. My all-time favorite is the YSL Touche Éclat Blur Primer because it gives my dull, dry skin a much-needed radiance boost while also blurring imperfections. I’m currently using the Smashbox Photo Finish primer because I feel like it stands up best against the summer heat and really grips my makeup. I also discovered the Too Faced Hangover Rx primer this past winter and it is seriously hydrating. I know I’ll be using this a lot in the colder months, but if you have extra dry skin this one is great year-round.
The second, and most important, step is tinted moisturizer. This summer I set out to find the perfect CC cream / tinted moisturizer / lightweight foundation. Since I work from home, most days I do not put on any makeup. So, I usually like to glam it up for the few times a week I do wear makeup because for one thing, it’s fun and for another, it’s nice to remind myself that I have the ability to clean up nicely when I want to. That said, I needed to find a lighter, breathable stand-in “foundation” for the summer months.
Enter this YSL Touche Éclat All-in-One Glow tinted moisturizer. After reading tons of reviews and trying 5-6 different products, this is the one that best fit my needs. It’s super lightweight and breathable, but still addresses my core issues (uneven skin tone and dryness). The best part is that it takes two seconds to apply and is virtually impossible to mess up. I simply pump twice onto my fingers and spread the product as evenly as possible over my face, including my eyelids and under-eye area. Then, I use a damp beauty blender sponge to blend and remove any excess. I usually stop there since my goal with this product is light, semi-sheer coverage, but it is buildable up to medium coverage if needed. Since this is technically a moisturizer and not a foundation, you can skip the primer if you don’t feel like your skin needs it or if you are in a hurry. However, I find that primer significantly changes the wearability of the product and the evenness of the coverage.
(Almost) lastly, you want to apply a few finishing touches for a polished, yet still fresh-faced look. Even if I’m going for a natural vibe, I still apply mascara and a nude lip. I’ve used Too Faced Better Than False Lashes mascara ever since I developed an allergy to my eyelash extensions years ago. When I have the time, I also curl and prime my lashes before I apply mascara because my sad, short lashes need all the help they can get.
For lips my go-to is Charlotte Tilbury’s Lip Cheat Lip Liner in Pillow Talk. I love this liner because it never wears off and you can overline and shape your lips to your heart’s content. I follow the liner with a lipstick (I love the Charlotte Tilbury Matte Revolution lipstick in Pillow Talk because it matches perfectly) or a gloss (I’ve used Dior Addict Lip Maximizer in Beige for years) depending on what look I’m going for.
You can stop there for an easy, natural look which takes me under 10 minutes to complete! If you want a bit more glam you can always apply eyeshadow (I’m currently loving this palette) and highlight/contour (this one is my go-to).
Finally, I always spritz a setting spray on my face no matter how heavy or light my makeup is that day. Like a primer, I think this is an essential step that helps hold your look in place all day. The classic Urban Decay All Nighter spray has been my long-time favorite, but I recently discovered the Too Faced Hangover RX 3-in-1 spray, which smells amazing and is super hydrating.
